Omkring 720 år f. Kr, grundades staden Sybaris av Isis av Hellas och utnämndes till en forngrekisk koloni. Den var belägen vid Tarantobukten på det som idag skulle benämnas som just norr om hälen av den italienska stöveln.
Sybaris växte snabbt och befolkningen skaffade sig snart ett rykte om ett liv i lyx och lättsinnigt leverne. Sybariterna, som de kallade sig, levde för stunden och njöt verkligen av livets goda.
Kolonin förstördes tyvärr och dess invånare fördrevs därifrån av invånarna ifrån grannstaden Crotona år 511 före Kristus. Efter två misslyckade försök att återerövra staden byggdes staden Thuri upp istället i närheten av de gamla ruinerna av forna Sybaris.
Historien berättar att de även där fortsatte sitt leverne som äkta sybariter….
